Raw,
Did look at your AWESOME video, but, ...
From my experience, believe that your basic premise misses the main issue with most off-grid folks.
We are heards of cats. Many/most of us have relatively little daily interactions with neighbors. There is lots to do, individually, and many of us are NOT looking for "Leaders" -- most of us are doing our own thing/s.
Perhaps you should focus on The Amish. The video cameras should go over well with them. Perhaps religeous groups in UT might also be ripe for the pickins. These types of "communities" do have leaders, and do cooperate.
In my area, we do cooperate on road maintenance, and funding that is like pulling teeth. YMMV Opinions, Vic

Freedom - the American dream. What a joke. Most American's these days just seem to want socialism. Even the people that do want to be "free" and are willing to buck the trend to do it, are so deep into the civil law jusrisdiction, that they can never really be free. Do you have: SS#, TID#, Driver's License, Bank Accounts, Insurance, 401K, business license, contractor's license, etc, etc, etc. We American's just constantly give up our God-given rights and freedoms in exchange for government privileges. Give me a TV show that demonstrates how to drop out of all that! No wonder people want to go to the back country and "get away from it all". You want a leader? Go talk to a guy named George Gordon (georgegordon.com)

Let's not be wandering down the socio-political path, okay guys?
I'm not too keen on this whole thread as it seems to be of little value to the forum.

i tend to agree with all of you guys as off grid does not necessarily mean out in the woods with a community. i touched on this before that rawtv has a misconception about what off grid is and means. it simply means no utility power. that's all. it doesn't mean a commune in the woods as individuals in the cities can be off the grid. most of the really poor people are o g anyway as they can't afford the electric bills. if you, rawtv, pursue the stereotyped image you have of being off grid then you could make yourself look bad. it can, however, show an aspect of independent individuals in their effort to have what many take for granted by providing it for themselves, but many do this for various reasons and i think somebody already linked to a thread on why we go off grid. the efforts many of us go through are noteworthy, but pretty boring to the general public looking to be awed. if the awe factor isn't good enough or if it gets old quickly, which i suspect it will, i fear the show will be heading for the controversy factor and that's a turn off for me. i did like the efforts the guys put forth for mining gold and that i appreciated, but the squabbles did nothing for me. the medical aspects i was somewhat neutral on, but one has to watch for not going too far with that aspect.
i see nothing wrong with leaving this thread here as helping rawtv understand us is a plus and does contribute to our efforts in an indirect way. we have dumber stuff here and there.

Thank you all for your comments and feedback, we really do appreciate them.
We of course understand that off-grid is not necessarily out in the wilderness or necessarily sustainable, we just try to keep the posts on the shorter side so people actually read them! Alas, this does mean that we just have to choose a few descriptive words rather than try to explain all the possibilities and variables.
We're doing our best to reach out to as many different forums and people as possible (hence why you might have seen the same casting posts on other sites) that overlap with the ideological communities we're looking at - off-gridders, preppers, eco/sustainable, the list goes on...any group of people with individuals who have the basic skill sets and desire to build their own homestead (whatever that may be - I know that's another loaded word that doesn't apply to everyone!). And then out of all those people we're hoping to find our cast - the ones who are ready to build together and willing and able to communicate their experiences - and all its highs and lows - to the public.
Again, we're not trying to pigeonhole or stereotype anyone. That said we're trying to cast "relatable" people who will resonate with "everyday Americans" - nothing too out there and extreme - we're certainly not trying to paint the entire community as extremists! We're just trying to find a way to bring a more self-sufficient lifestyle to the forefront of American consciousness - there really is a huge huge groundswell of people looking at these options, and we'd like to find the people who can share their world with others and maybe inspire a few people to make some small changes in their own lives.
Thank you all again for your feedback - please keep it comin'! And don't hesitate to email me if you're curious but not sure about this whole tv thing. CASTING@RAW.CO.UK

TV viewers want instant gratification, and must have their interest stimulated constantly. Solar moves at such a slow pace, and there's nothing typical about "typical" installations. I can't see how any production company will be able to carry a series as their audience is confused by the facts.
Solar makes a good documentary, but a series? How do you plan on keeping your target audience tuned in?
